Abstract:

A new subgrade model is presented for the static and dynamic response analysis of surface foundations. The model consists of a number of horizontal layer model units. Each model unit is made of vertical springs and horizontal element containing mass to provide coupling between the two adjacent springs. The model is viewed as an extension of the Pasternak model and is simple enough to warrant efficiency in computations. Parameters of the proposed model are found to be uniquely depend on the subgrade properties. The capability of the model of reproducing the static and dynamic behavior of a continuous subgrade medium is examined for various cases and is found to be excellent.
