Fact or Friction: A Review of Soil Response to a Laterally Moving Pile

Abstract:

A review of soil response around a laterally moving pile is presented and 'Winkler' spring soil modulus variations are discussed. Based on available theory, and equilibrium calculations for four load tests, the significant presence of horizontal side shear drag, or friction, is confirmed. Based on a new recognition of the importance for side shear under working load, remedial measures are proposed to improve the field performance of piles, which include a 'Friction Cage' to maximize shear.
