Abstract:

Cavity-prone carbonate rocks are found in many Appalachian valleys and represent a poorly recognized hazard. This paper reviews the nature of the problem of founding above these Cambro-Ordovician carbonates and the geotechnical investigative procedures that are necessary. Possible foundation solutions are presented. A Township of Clinton ordinance which addresses these geotechnical concerns is summarized as an example of the legal process available to reduce construction related hazards.
