Abstract:

This paper outlines the theory associated with single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structural response models which account for soil-structure interaction (SSI) and evaluates the performance of such models against test data from the Foam HEST series. The major features of SSI in the SDOF model are an equivalent forcing function which is proportional to twice the stress in the free-field soil and a relief term which acts like a damper. The preliminary evaluation indicates that the SDOF-SSI model appears to give reasonable estimates of the loading and response of roof slabs in shallow-buried structures, but that the model yields much better results for clay backfills than for sand backfills.
