Abstract:

This paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art publication on the same subject under preparation by ASCE-ACI Committee 442's Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Inelastic Response of Concrete Structures. Current seismic design practice is based on implicit consideration of inelastic structural response in the event of severe earthquakes. Alternative design approaches based on consideration of inelasticity and aimed at control of inelastic structural response are discussed. Particular attention is paid to one suggested design procedure that uses earthquake accelerograms as loading, and dynamic inelastic response history analysis to determine member forces and deformations.
