by H. W. Martin, American Iron & Steel Inst, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Seismic Engineering: Research and Practice

Abstract:

This paper will give the reader an introduction to the seismic design provisions for steel structures in the 1988 Uniform Building Code. Chapter 27 in the 1988 UBC now contains over ten pages of extensive detailing requirements for seismic design of steel framed structures in Seismic Zones 2, 3 and 4. These requirements are based upon 'Recommended Lateral Force Requirements--1988', also known as 'The Blue Book', by the Seismology Committee of the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC). The UBC steel seismic provisions may be found in Section 2722. There are new requirements for columns, ordinary and special moment frames, concentrically and eccentrically braced frames, and stud wall systems.
