Abstract:

This paper presents an overview of the lateral force section of the new seismic design provisions of the 1988 edition of the Uniform Building Code (ICBO, 1988), and the 1988 Blue Book (SEAOC, 1988). Although there are some nominal differences, the provisions in these two documents are essentially identical. The Blue Book - 'Recommended Lateral Force Requirements and Tentative Commentary' was developed by the Seismology Committee of the Structural Engineers Association of California. The UBC, published by the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), has incorporated the new SEAOC recommended provisions.
