Abstract:

This paper provides background and describes on-going work by the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) to develop design requirements for seismically isolated structures. The primary focus of the paper is the presentation of the design philosophy, design methods, and key technical aspects of draft provisions recently developed by the Ad Hoc Base Isolation Subcommittee of the Seismology Committee of SEAOC. When complete and approved the design provisions for isolated structures will serve as a supplement to SEAOC's existing design requirements for conventional, fixed-base structures.
