Abstract:
Measures taken in Mexico City after the 1985 earthquake to evaluate the safety of existing buildings, to strengthen damaged structures and to retrofit those that were considered to need additional seismic capacity are briefly described. Lessons from recent major events that provided basic guidance for the procedures adopted are discussed. The most important aspects of the evaluation methods and the strengthening procedures are presented.
