Buckling Criteria for Earthquake-Induced Overturning Stresses in Cylindrical Liquid Storage Tanks

Abstract:

Perhaps one of the most common forms of seismic damage to cylindrical liquid storage tanks made out of steel is buckling of the tank wall due to vertical overturning stresses. Buckling criteria are reviewed herein, and it is shown that plastic collapse criteria developed by axisymmetric analyses [J.M. Rotter (1985), R. Peek (1984)] are also approximately applicable when the loading is not axisymmetric.
