Abstract:

The analysis and design of structures of pultruded fiber reinforced plastic (FRP), constant cross-section, commercially produced, beams is discussed in the context of a shear deformation beam theory. The importance of accounting for shear deformation effects in a FRP beam is emphasized and the need for characterizing the beam in terms of both a full-section flexural modulus and a full-section shear modulus is explained. An experimental methodology is discussed whereby these two section moduli are obtained simultaneously in a simple three-point bend test.
