Abstract:

Highway and railway bridges fabricated from ASTM A7, A36, and A572 steels will corrode if the paint system is allowed to fail for lack of maintenance. Corroding members lose cross section and pit. The loss in cross sectional area in the plane of the crack increases the nominal stress range. The pits act at stress raisers that may lead to rapid crack initiation.
