Abstract:

A knowledge-based expert system named 'BABE' (Bridge and Building Evaluation) has been developed for the purpose of helping the user in planning, analysis and design of buildings and bridge structures. This paper covers two major items offered by the system: the first is selecting the type of bridge support system to be used with considerations given to local soil type and the geological, hydrogeological and environmental characteristics; the second part is the design of bridge abutments and piers from both structural and geotechnical engineering points of view. 'BABE' can also be used for construction and maintenance planning of various types of building and bridge systems.
