Abstract:

This paper reviews contributions to the practice of transportation engineering by research in the traffic and safety area. Brief overviews are provided in the area of traffic operations on signal timing, freeway metering, HOV lanes, incident management, and motorist information. In safety research the following areas are highlighted: work zone safety, road geometrics and design, human factors, driver safety, and traffic control and safety hardware.
