Abstract:

The shortage of transportation professionals is an issue which is receiving increased attention by the engineering profession. Recent civil engineering enrollment statistics compiled by ASCE indicate that the number of students pursuing civil engineering degrees is declining, and may not be adequate to meet the projected demand. This paper discusses some methods of promoting career opportunities in highway engineering. By acting as role models and serving as friends and counselors to young people, highway engineers can improve the image of the profession, communicate the challenges and opportunities available, and ultimately, attract qualified people who are willing to accept the challenge and enter the highway engineering profession.
