CARTS: Next Generation in Vehicle Safety Research

Abstract:

The California Automotive Research Test Site (CARTS), is a new joint test facility for use by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the University of California at Davis (UCD). It is now in the design phase. The facility will be used for 1) crash tests by Caltrans on highway safety features with vehicles weighing up to 20,000 pounds and traveling up to 65 mph, 2) prototype vehicle handling tests by the UCD Mechanical Engineering Department, and 3) slow speed tests of automated highway devices by Caltrans, UCD and others.
