Abstract:

The Advanced Vehicle Command and Control System (AVCCS) is being developed to solve capacity problems on major urban highways using automation and current technology. The objective of AVCCS is to automate vehicle operations, minimizing the human element. AVCCS enables the integration of roadside traffic control devices with on-board vehicle computer systems. The overall system diagram is presented Although the detailed operation of these systems, the integration of automated and non-automated vehicles in traffic, and potential systems applications have yet to be fully explored, the Advance Vehicle Command and Control System (AVCCS) has enormous potential for changing transportation system operations and solving the ever-increasing problem of urban congestion.
