Future Federal Pavement Policy

by Joe Massucco, Federal Highway Administration, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Engineering 21st Century Highways

Abstract:

Pavement design is entering a new era of increased attention and research insight. Since most of our pavements are in place and under traffic, much of future design will be for their rehabilitation and reconstruction considering methods most appropriate for construction under heavy traffic. A number of foreseen and un-foreseen developments will influence future pavements and pavement design policies. The paper outlines how present Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) pavement policies will influence future pavement designs and how future policies may respond to the changing demands placed on pavements by the highway user.
