Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Seismic Design and Construction of Complex Civil Engineering Systems

Abstract:

This paper begins with a brief summary of significant earthquake damage to gas and oil lifeline systems during several earthquakes. Following this discussion, the objectives and major tasks of a seismic risk assessment study are outlined. Next, an example is provided which illustrates the benefit of performing a seismic risk assessment of a large natural gas system. Finally, a discussion is presented that identifies several major problem and issue areas associated with the practical implementation of seismic risk approaches to gas and oil lifeline systems.
