Abstract:

Soviet engineers clearly recognize the potential value of welding for maintenance, repair, and fabrication of structures in space. The development of this technology has followed a steady path for more than twenty years. This paper traces that development from the earliest days to the present. Research into a number of joining processes has been conducted in the laboratory, aboard research aircraft, and on-orbit. The highlight of the program to date has been extravehicular activity demonstration experiments.
