Abstract:

The authors have developed a laboratory planar truss and structural dynamic models which correlate well. The inherent fraction critical damping (? = .004 for the first mode) is very low indicating that the system has achieved nearly frictionless motion in the plane of the truss. The present structure and models with the planned refinements should provide insight into the practical issues associated with many of the recent theoretical developments in control of flexible structures.
