Abstract:

In order to shorten the time to develop a hydroelectric project at the Corps of Engineers Hannibal Lock and Dam on the Ohio River for the City of New Martinsville, West Virginia, a turnkey construction contract was used. The contract specified physical modeling. Two fixed bed models were required, built at scales of 1:120 and 1:40. In addition, dynamic similitude had to be achieved in both models. The model testing required a number of modifications to the conceptual design in order to meet the required hydraulic performance criteria. These modifications were then transferred into the prototype design which was being done at the same time.
