Abstract:

Parameter estimation for multiphase flow in porous media involves estimation of nonlinear functional relationships. These include the capillary pressure - saturation relation and the relative permeability - saturation relation. Network models, which provide a topologically complex yet mathematically tractable description of the pore space of a porous medium, can be used to model basic fluid physics at the pore scale. Aggregation over many pores then allows the capillary pressure - saturation relation to be derived. The key parameters to be estimated in the network model are probability distributions that describe the pore sizes.
