Abstract:

The Penman formula for potential evapotranspiration (ETp) and the Energy Balance Method for actual evapotranspiration (ETr) provide information on evapotranspiration rates. Examination of the formulae to compute ETp (PET) and ETr (AET) indicates the importance of high precision in micro-climatic measurements. Strict technical choices in hardware, electronics, and data processing have allowed solutions of problems in the design of accurate and reliable systems for evapotranspiration measurements. Ten years of experiments and comparisons done by various institutes, universities, meteorological services, and companies under various climates show that these systems can be now used in large scale irrigated areas with a view towards irrigation optimization.
