Inspection of Under Bridge Length Culverts

by John M. Kurdziel, American Concrete Pipe Assoc, Vienna, VA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Pipeline Infrastructure

Abstract:

Culverts over 20 feet in span length are classified as bridges and are inspected under the National Bridge Inventory and Inspection Program. Those facilities under bridge length, less than 20 feet in span, however, are seldom inspected. Failure of these smaller structures can, and often do, cause as much damage as bridge length culverts. This paper will concentrate on the inspection of these structures, why their inspection is critical and how the recently published Federal Highway Administration's Culvert Inspection Manual can be used in identifying culvert distress conditions.
