Considerations in the Design and Installation of Horizontally Drilled Pipeline River Crossings

by John D. Hair,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Pipeline Infrastructure

Abstract:

The authors will present a review of directionally controlled horizontal drilling techniques for pipeline installation by describing the state-of-the-art of the process vis-a-vis subsurface conditions. River activity mechanisms will be discussed relative to their effect on crossing design. A typical crossing site investigation - involving a geological/geotechnical exploration as well as topographic and hydrological surveys - will be presented. The presentation will conclude with recommended improvements to techniques for investigating, designing, and executing drilled pipeline river crossings.
