Abstract:

The selection of the most suitable pipe for a given site involves the consideration of many factors affecting pipe performance. The factors to consider in sewer pipe evaluation and selection are corrosion, pipe availability, abrasion, structural strength, hydraulics, expected service life, cost, maintenance, quality assurance, joints, future expansion, and track record. An expert system developed to include these factors in the decision making process is introduced in this paper. This expert system called PIPE will assist the city or design engineer to evaluate various candidate pipe materials for a given sewer pipeline project, compute a composite score for each pipe material, and rank all materials in accordance with their suitability.
