Abstract:

The goal in this project is to create an expert system to do failure mode investigations from 'first principles,' or the basic understanding of the way components function and fail, without prior knowledge of a system's failure modes. The expert system must identify and analyze the most significant failure modes first, obtaining better refinement of the analysis iteratively as necessary. The expert system may also be required to investigate an incomplete system. Attention is focused on defining the architecture desirable for the failure mode investigation expert system and on identifying research needs. This paper describes a hypothetical expert system at a very high level of abstraction. Two prototype systems are discussed.
