Abstract:

This paper builds a framework of an expert system in the area of offshore structures. Expert systems, in general, are classification systems. They embody a core of knowledge about a specific field. This knowledge encapsulates the knowledge of experts in that field and is largely experimental. This knowledge is arranged using the process of knowledge engineering to provide the required solution for each specific case. The expert system draws upon both its own knowledge and that of the user when its own is inadequate. This paper presents a framework of an expert system for the analysis and design of offshore structures. Production System was chosen as the representational 'structure' for embedding the problem solving activity and which provided sufficient basis for developing the reasoning mechanism. In construction of this system, therefore., there is now a standard way to 'structure' them, so that the job of building such programs can look much more like a knowledge-engineering problem than like a system-design problem.
