Abstract:

The reliability of redundant structural systems under fatigue including updating by inspection is studied using two different formulations, i.e., the stress intensity space and the crack length space formulation. The simpler crack length space formation is found to be appropriate only if the dominant sequence of componental failures is predetermined by the richer stress intensity space formulation and the critical crack length is assessed accurately.
