Abstract:

The method of invariant linear combinations of linearly associated lower bound safety margins is used for constructing upper bound approximations of the generalized reliability index with respect to collapse of discretized ideal plastic structures with general yield conditions. The computations can be speeded up if the yield conditions are replaced by approximating yield conditions that are polyhedral in both internal generalized stresses and strength variables. The strain rate vectors and the combination coefficients in the obtained upper bound safety margins associated to the set of substitute yield conditions are used for construction of upper bound safety margins associated to the set of given yield conditions. These, in turn, lead to an exact upper bound on the generalized reliability index.
