by Joseph E. Fluet, Jr., GeoServices Inc, Boynton Beach, FL, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Geosynthetics for Soil Improvement

Abstract:

The paper summarizes major developments in the field of geosynthetics since the previous symposium in 1980. The paper addresses the engineering functions of major types of geosynthetics, discusses new products and applications, and forecasts expected developments. A review of the papers in this symposium is also included along with a brief review of the impact of the papers presented at the 1980 symposium. The paper also includes highlights of the major geosynthetic conferences since 1980. One particularly interesting aspect of the paper is a description of the history of geosynthetics from a socio-technical perspective. This discussion of the cultural development of the geosynthetics industry is related to technical changes in the geosynthetics discipline.
