Abstract:

Engineers, planners, and officials of agencies responsible for developing water resource projects are confronted with preparing preliminary designs and cost estimates for dams. This paper provides a rapid method to prepare appraisal level designs and cost estimates for RCC dams. Given the site characteristics, guidance is provided to assist the planner in determining basic dimensions and estimating concrete volumes. Cost curves developed using statistical data from constructed RCC dams are presented as easy-to-use charts for estimating construction costs. The appraisal level design includes considerations for foundation preparation and appurtenant structures.
