Abstract:

This paper details Voith Hydro's range of experience in the use of Programmable Logic Controllers (P. L. C. 's) in the automation of new hydro electric sites. Voith's system designs employ P. L. C. s for three classes of functions. First, the P. L. C. performs system monitoring, device control and all logic and interlock functions. Second, the P. L. C. exploits its mathematical capabilities to perform several advanced closed loop control functions, head level control, flow control, load matching, gate and blade angle control, cam curves, etc. Third, the P. L. C. performs advanced communication functions; peer to peer, master to slave, remote control and System Control and Data Acquisition (S. C. A. D. A. ) The thrust of this paper is to detail P. L. C. capabilities beyond rudimentary relay logic emulation.
