Abstract:

An upgrade of two (2) 4. 06 meter diameter high specific speed Francis turbines is now in progress. These machines were originally installed by Allis-Chalmers in the 1920's and subsequently upgraded with new runners in approximately 1950. For this project a homologous model wheel case was manufactured and installed in an independent laboratory. A model of the existing runner was manufactured and tested in order to provide a baseline for comparison. After these tests, two manufacturers supplied model runners of their proposed designs which were evaluated competitively. The results helped form the basis for making an award for the upgrade of the turbines. This paper describes the design of the new runner which was selected for this project.
