Abstract:

This paper discusses the investigation of the doubly-fed variable speed machine as a potential candidate to convert a varying input speed to a constant frequency, constant voltage output. Although this concept is applicable to all rotating generation configurations with speed dependent efficiency, special emphasis was placed on hydro and wind power sources. The system is particularly suitable for hydro-power applications. Most hydro-power plants are subject to varying dam conditions dictated by either flood control requirements or weather patterns affecting the reservoir level.
