Abstract:

Two monthly computer operational models, OROTHM1 and OROTHM2, were developed to provide more detailed operation and maintenance studies for the Oroville facilities. Currently another computer model, CE-QUAL-R1 written by the Corp of Engineers, is being adapted to work with OROTHM1 and OROTHM2 to provide temperature profiling studies of Lake Oroville. The models provide long range insight into scheduled and forced unit shutdowns, while incorporating pumpback operations, flood reservation changes and potentially water temperature profiling of the reservoir. The models can also be used to examine problems of meeting existing water and power contracts under drought conditions or structural problems which would not allow the reservoir to fill. Various examples of Oroville reservoir operations studies are given in the paper.
