Abstract:

This paper outlines the potential for remote off-grid small hydro development in Ontario and the present incentives that exist to develop these resources. Estimated costs of development will be provided based on a sample of prefeasibility reports. The paper also identifies the present barriers to development and attempts to establish some benchmarks to assess future direction. In the long run, development of a well planned and implemented remote off-grid small hydro strategy will reduce the consumption of expensive diesel fuel, which will in turn reduce total operating expenditures and provide many communities and businesses with more disposable income with which to expand.
