Abstract: This book contains English translations of 19 articles selected from the Chinese Journal of Geotechnical Engineering. Five of the papers are concerned with the strength and deformation of various types of soils including normally consolidated saturated clay, soft clay, saturated cohesive subsoils, sand, and collapsible loess. Four papers on soil dynamics cover liquefaction, dynamic shear modulus, and seismic wave velocity. Three papers cover pile load tests. One paper describes formulas for calculating seepage of a partially penetrating well. The remaining papers deal with rock mechanics. Topics in this section include the relation between acoustic parameters and mechanical properties of rocks, dynamic calculations of an underground rock cavity, stability of a gravity-arch dam, fracture tests of rock, weak plane in rock mass, and influence of rock moisture content on longitudinal wave velocity.
