Abstract:
This report is a guide for engineers who are responsible for the design and analysis of large turbine-generator foundations. A description of the various components of turbine-generator equipment is presented. Load cases that must be considered for analysis and design of the foundation are discussed. Guidelines are provided for establishing initial overall foundation dimensions, and for establishing the initial sizes of the transverse and longitudinal girders, columns, and foundation mat. Development of both static and dynamic analytical models for the turbine foundation, including the mat and supporting soil, is discussed. A commentary is given on the various deflection criteria utilized and the load cases to be considered for evaluating deflections. Design criteria for the components of the foundation are reviewed. A general discussion of steel foundations is presented. The concept of spring-mounted machine foundations and their details are reviewed.
