Abstract:

The technology of formal, numerical structural optimization is neither mysterious nor complex. Software programs are now available for use by engineers who do not have detailed knowledge of the underlying theory. One example is a very simple truss problem in which the cross-sectional area and the height are treated as independent variables. It was solved on a microcomputer in a matter of minutes.
