Abstract:

Optimal use of energy resources requires intelligent planning by all segments of society, especially the technical disciplines. Civil engineers play a key role in developing energy resources while, at the same time, protecting the environment. Energy '87, a specialty conference sponsored by the ASCE Energy Division in April, 1987, provided a forum for exchange of ideas among civil engineers directly involved in the energy industry. Approximately 100 papers were presented covering six broad areas of interest: Nuclear power, hydroelectric power, fossil power, environmental effects, alternative energy resources, and energy resources management. This volume is a collection of the papers presented at Energy '87. The unifying thread of the diverse spectrum of subject matter covered is immediate applicability, of the concepts and proposals advanced, to existing industry needs.

Subject Headings: Hydro power | Nuclear power | Industries | Resource management | Professional societies | Energy consumption | Alternative energy
