Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Coastal Zone '87

Abstract:

The paper briefly explains the features of four coastal laboratories established along the southwest coast of India in 1980 and the data gathered by them during 1980-84. Four coastal piers each about 100 kms apart, at these laboratories were utilized for the wave, breaker, nearshore currents and other beach parameter measurements. Based on the analysis of the data thus gathered, the spatial and temporal variations of the various coastal parameters are established. The mechanisms of beach changes/development are studied. The data base built is used for the development of models for the prediction of waves, sediment transport, erosion etc. The problems faced during the establishment of the net-work of stations and the collection, processing, storage and retrieval of the data are discussed.
