Protection of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Abstract:

Historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has recently become threatened by shoreline erosion. Shore protection measures for the lighthouse are summarized and shoreline changes and erosion rates are reported for Cape Hatteras. Alternatives for providing long-term protection are described leading to the selection of a seawall/revetment which will encircle the lighthouse. Basis for the design and a description of the seawall/revetment plan are presented.
