Abstract:

The Marine and Estuarine Management Division in cooperation with the U. S. Man and the Biosphere Program and other international organizations sponsored the International Marine Protected Area Management Seminar. The Seminar focused on international issues concerning the management of marine protected areas and resulted in the adoption of an Action Plan which addresses issues confronting countries at various stages in developing and managing these special ocean areas. One item of the Action Plan was the need to establish an international network specifically geared toward marine protected areas. Establishing the network was viewed as a mechanism to promote awareness of current developments and trends in the management of these areas through information exchange and technical assistance. The International Marine Protected Area Network is an opportunity for countries to share information on approaches used in solving management related issues.
