Abstract:

The government, recognizing the need to conserve coastal resources, created in 1977 the Marine Park Inter-Agency Task Force to prepare and supervise the implementation of a master plan for the development and management of a marine park system in the country. In order to fulfill this objective, a Marine Park/Reserve Development Program was established with the following major goals: to enhance coastal resource protection through the implementation of a comprehensive management plan; to enhance public awareness and wise use of the marine resources through information campaign and interpretive programs; and to promote and coordinate research activities to expand scientific knowledge, determine additional sources of livelihood and to improve management decision making.
