Abstract:

This paper provides five criteria for comparing the nineteen coastal countries within Latin America in terms that are relevant to the management of coastal resources or environments. The five criteria are: coastal orientation; issues motivating program creation; stage in program evolution; governance arrangements; and management strategies. Each of these criteria is described. Based on the definition of coastal area management given, five programs are underway in Latin America. Future directions and prospects for coastal area management in the region are discussed.
