Abstract:

Since most of the big cities in Japan locate near seacoast, the sea has been playing great role in their developments. It is necessary to make a good quality of public stock, coping with booming demands for recreation and to conserve precious natural environment in order to form safe and comfortable public bases. In view of these circumstances, Ministry of Construction, Japan, promotes a 'Marine Multi-purpose Zone Project' which will develop and utilize coastal zone for uban spaces. This paper discusses seacoast protection against storm surges and erosion, Japanese coastal zones, marine recreation, and related subjects.
