Abstract:

As a further response to the pressures of development, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has contracted the International Union for Conservation of nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) to help integrate social and economic development with conservation of the natural resources of the greater capital area's coastal environment. IUCN, through the authors, has prepared a Coastal Zone Management Plan for the capital area (Muscat), which includes 200 km of mainland coast, nearshore seas, and offshore islands. The strategy behind the formulation of this plan represents Phase 1 of an on-going four-year project and forms the basis of this paper.
