Abstract:
The method previously suggested by the author in 1977 for calculating settlement of non-plastic to slightly plastic Piedmont Physiographic Region residual soils is reviewed. Additional pressuremeter data is included from throughout the Piedmont for development of a revised correlation between pressuremeter modulus and Standard Penetration Test N value. The rheological factor alpha relating the soil modulus of deformation to the pressuremeter modulus is re-evaluated based on new case histories and a value of 1 is again recommended. Thus, settlements may be calculated using the pressuremeter modulus as an approximation of the soil modulus of deformation when good quality pressurement modulus profiles are available for a specific site. A correction factor to be applied to the general settlement equation when rock occurs within the depth of influence of the foundation is presented.
